About us
We receive many questions about our organization's name, Adapting to Scarcity. We believe there is a scarcity of clean water in the world. We do have enough water to support the amount of life on Earth, but not enough clean water. We define lack of access to clean water not only as lack of access to potable water, but also people living in proximity or affected by water contamination. They, too, lack access to clean water. We chose the word Adapting to suggest that our situation is difficult, but there is hope. We can address these issues and live happily and healthily. But it does require change - from polluters, consumers, communities and most others in between.
Beginning with a research proposal by Sarah Kelly, Adapting to Scarcity was originally an anthropological and policy study of how communities respond to a diminishing supply of clean water. Over the last two years, the project has continuously evolved throughout its development and implementation. By becoming an organization and expanding the project to include grassroots multi-media components, the project has gained new partnerships and support. Arthur Richards came on as the Co-Director and brings a wealth of technical and social justice experience. We have a wonderful group of collaborators and volunteers, and are always open to new relationships and exchanges.
